Hard disks can fail for a number of reasons, however the symptoms are few.
Symptoms of hard disk failure
- Hard disk is clicking - indicates an internal head based problem
- Hard disk is making a grinding noise - head crash or motor bearing failure
- Drive is not spinning - Motor failure or electronics fault
- Drive spinning but screeching or rattling noise - Typical failure of Toshiba motor problems
- Logical problems - Missing data, deleted data, formatted hard disks, virus damage and errors where the drive is working but the data can not be accessed.
The causes for the problems will depend upon the initial failure, but some logical problems can be put down to simple human error, whereas mechanical problems can be the result of wear and tear, faulty components and accidental damage.
